If you happened to be in downtown Chicago during the first week of January this year, you would have seen something incredibly strange – hundreds of young people, somethings, dressed in new suits and stiff new shoes, a lot of them running. They’re sprinting down the sidewalks of the city back and forth across the Chicago River. The reason – the reason they’re running is that the economics profession at some point decided that it was going to create a job market unlike any other. MA: Every university or company that wants to hire a professional economist has come here to Chicago for the weekend. Every employer’s set up in a different hotel room in hotels all across the city. Book Speed Dating, comes from the idea of actual speed dating, except it allows the students to filter through a wide selection of books to find one they like to continue dating, or in this case reading! Students start at one table and choose a book to preview for 5 minutes, they can read the back of the book, front of the book, or even begin reading it. At the end of the five minutes, they switch and move on to another table to start the process over or they can stay where they are and keep reading!
The tables have their own themes — like hopeless romantic, books that will make you ugly cry, and more. The idea behind the event is to create a fun activity to get the students to explore the variety of books available to them and so they can leave with one they love and want to continue reading. I had gone to record the night, which was put on by a company called Professionals in the City, and what struck me was the noise in the room. The sound of words, of people talking over people talking over people talking.

But for whoever needed guidance, there was Hill’s Manual of Social and Business Forms, a compendium of knowledge and etiquette. As the edition observed, the ritual of New Year’s Calling “enables gentlemen to know positively who will be prepared to receive them on that occasion. By convention, male visitors were invited into the house. If the woman wanted the man to stay for a while, she could ask him to remove his hat and coat.
Otherwise, she was to offer refreshments and conversation while he remained dressed for the cold. A lady was encouraged by societal rules to accept male visitors in the privacy of her home.
